    Ode to Washington Irving

Since I have lived in the Hudson Valley area most of my life, reading Washington Irving’s stories had special meaning for me. Though works of fiction, the places were very much real; you get a sense what life was like along the Hudson River during those halcyon days of a young nation.

Washington Irving was a great author — considered the first American man of letters and a not too shabby statesman — he is certainly one of my favorites. To that end, I pay homage by republishing two of his most celebrated stories: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle. Enjoy.

I had been doing volunteer work with Chris Cassone over at Sober Teens in New York (he started the program, actually), mostly managing the group’s website and print materials, but we had talked on and off about designing a website for his business Treasure Hunt Adventures, a team building event firm.

Chris is a member of the United States Orienteering Federation and was a friend of the late Bjorn Kjellstrom, Father of American Orienteering and inventor of the modern compass. His company teaches people about team building using orienteering. If you like treasure hunts then you’ll like his events. No client is too big or too small.

Pro-Formance Industries is an innovative bio-mechanical manufacturer of healthcare products located in Southern New Hampshire. For over 30 years, Pro-Formance’s goal has been to enhance the lives of people by producing ergonomically designed products that provide comfort and support. Pro-Formance does this by designing products with experts and seeking the highest quality components to produce the most durable, comfort-enhancing products on the market.

Today, we officially launch the website for new product line of Ergo-Step Insoles. We were given only two weeks to design and develop an ecommerce solution (using ColdFusion) but we’re pretty proud of the end results. Moreover, so is the client.

“Our goal was to provide Ergo-Step insoles to the medical community at a discounted, volume rate. We wanted to make it as easy and cost effective as possible so our marketing research pointed toward an integrated online solution,” said Deb Johnson, President of Pro-Formance Industries. “We also needed the solution to be scalable and we needed it quickly. Within two weeks, answerYES and our marketing department were able to build a list of robust requirements and create an informative dynamic website where both healthcare professionals and patients can order online. Most importantly, we know we’ll be expanding our business and answerYES has designed a scalable solution poised to expand and integrate with our back-end processes.”

Friends Beyond The Wall, an organization that provides pen pal services to inmates (yes, you read that right), commissioned me to create this Flash movie to promote awareness about second chances within the Sing Sing Correctional Facility. Specifically, the New York Theological Seminary graduates who have been denied paroles. Apparently, the reasons for these denied paroles had more do with State politics than the inmate’s prison record. It is pretty easy to assume the worst of people sent to prison but regardless of your views, the spirit of these men who push themselves to be better human beings despite the reality of their circumstance is indeed impressive.
