The Center for Addiction Studies and Research is a New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services approved distance learning provider of education in the chemical dependency field. Distance learning courses are approved for Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC), Credentialed Prevention Professional (CPP), Credentialed Prevention Specialist (CPS), and Problem Gambling Specialty Designation certification and continuing education requirements.

 

Educational Requirements

Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC)

Documentation of 350 hours distributed among four sections described below. There is no limit on the number of hours that can be earned through distance learning education.

Section 1: Of the 85 required clock hours, 4 hours must be related to tobacco use and nicotine dependence.

Section 2: Of the 150 required clock hours, 15 hours must be specific to cultural competence.

Section 4: Of the required 45 clock hours, 2 hours must include Child Abuse and Maltreatment Mandated Reporter training. Of the required 45 clock hours, 15 must be specific to ethics for addiction professionals.

Section 1: Knowledge of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse – 85 Clock Hours

Section 2: Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counseling – 150 Clock Hours

Section 3: Assessment; Clinical Evaluation; Treatment Planning; Case Management;
Patient, Family and Community Education – 70 Clock Hours

Section 4: Professional and Ethical Responsibilities – 45 Clock Hours

Pathological Gambling

Credentialed Prevention Professional (CPP)

Documentation of 250 clock hours distributed among four sections described below. There is no limit on the number of hours that can be earned through distance learning education.

  • Knowledge of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse at all Age Levels and Among People of Diverse Backgrounds and Cultures - 85 Clock Hours
  • Prevention Specific Hours Related to the Performance Domains - 60 Clock Hours
  • Professional Development and Ethical Responsibilities - 45 Clock Hours
  • Prevention Principles and the Services Continuum - 60 Clock Hours

Section 1: Of the 85 required clock hours, 4 hours must be related to tobacco use and nicotine dependence and 15 hours must be specific to cultural competence.

Section 3: Of the required 45 clock hours, 2 hours must include Child Abuse and Maltreatment Mandated Reporter training and 15 must be specific to ethics for prevention principles and practices.

Credentialed Prevention Specialist (CPS)

Documentation of 100 clock hours distributed among four sections described below. There is no limit on the number of hours that can be earned through distance learning education.

  • Knowledge of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse at all Age Levels and Among People of Diverse Backgrounds and Cultures - 50 Clock Hours
  • Prevention Specific Hours Related to the Performance Domains - 38 Clock Hours
  • Ethical Responsibilities - 12 Clock Hours

Section 1: Of the 50 required clock hours, 4 hours must be related to tobacco use and nicotine dependence and 15 hours must be specific to cultural competence.

Section 3: Of the required 12 clock hours, 2 hours must include Child Abuse and Maltreatment Mandated Reporter training and 10 hours must be specific to ethics for prevention professionals.

Continuing Education Requirements (CASAC, CPP, CPS)

Documentation of 60 hours of approved continuing education every three years. There is no limit on the number of hours that can be earned through distance learning education.

Of the 60 continuing education hours, 2 hours must include Child Abuse and Maltreatment Mandated Reporter training and 4 hours must be related to tobacco use and nicotine dependence.
