The Center for Addiction Studies and Research is an Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals (OCDP) Board approved distance learning provider of education in the chemical dependency field (Provider #01-1012-91PVN). Distance learning hours are approved for Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistant (CDCA), Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC Levels II and III) and Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor (LICDC) certification and recertification requirements. There is no limit on the number of distance learning hours that can be applied toward certification or recertification requirements.

 

Educational Requirements

Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistant (CDCA)

Documentation of 40 hours of approved education in chemical dependency counseling/clinical methods.

Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor II (LCDC II)

An Associate's degree in Behavioral Science or a Bachelor's Degree in any field.

Documentation of 270 education hours in chemical dependency education in nine specific content areas.

  • Theories of Addiction (24 Clock Hour Minimum)
  • Counseling Procedures/Strategies with Addicted Populations (24 Clock Hour Minimum)
  • Group Process and Techniques with Addicted Populations (18 Clock Hour Minimum)
  • Assessment and Diagnosis of Addiction (24 Clock Hour Minimum)
  • Relationship Counseling with Addicted Populations (24 Clock Hour Minimum)
  • Pharmacology (18 Clock Hour Minimum)
  • Prevention Strategies (12 Clock Hour Minimum)
  • Treatment Planning (18 Clock Hour Minimum)
  • Legal and Ethical Issues Pertaining to Chemical Dependency (12 Clock Hour Minimum)

The remaining 96 hours may be distributed among the nine content areas at the applicant's discretion.

There is no limit on the number of contact hours that can be earned through home study distance learning trainings.

OCDP content hour requirements can be satisfied with the following educational courses.

Assessment and Diagnosis of Addiction (24 Clock Hour Minimum)

  • Screening and Assessment for Substance Use Disorders - 25 Clock Hours

Relationship Counseling with Addicted Populations (24 Clock Hour Minimum)

  • Integrating Family Therapy into Substance Abuse Treatment - 25 Clock Hours

Legal and Ethical Issues Pertaining to Chemical Dependency (12 Clock Hour Minimum)

  • Confidentiality of Patient Records - 10 Clock Hours
  • Ethics in Addiction Counseling - 20 Clock Hours
  • HIV/AIDS: Ethical, Legal Issues, Professional Considerations - 15 Clock Hours

Clinical Supervision in Substance Abuse Counseling (6 Clock Hours)
Clinical Supervision in Substance Abuse Counseling (30 Clock Hours)

Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor III (LCDC III) Educational Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in a behavioral science field.

Documentation of 270 education hours in chemical dependency education in the nine specific content areas outlined above.

There is no limit on the number of contact hours that can be earned through home study distance learning trainings.

Content hour requirements can be satisfied with the educational courses listed above.

Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor (LICDC)

Master's Degree in a behavioral science field.

Documentation of 270 education hours in chemical dependency education in the nine specific content areas outlined above.

Documentation of 30 hours of clinical supervisory education.

There is no limit on the number of contact hours that can be earned through home study distance learning trainings.

Continuing Education Requirements (CDCA, LCDC Levels II and III, LICDC)

Documentation of forty (40) hours of continuing education every two years.
