The Center for Addiction Studies and Research is a Rhode Island Board for the Certification of Chemical Dependency Professionals approved distance learning provider of education in the chemical dependency field. Distance learning courses are approved for Provisional Certified Chemical Dependency Professional (PCDP), Licensed Chemical Dependency Professional (LCDP Tracks 1 and 2), and Recognized Clinical Supervisor (RCS) certification and continuing education requirements.

 

Educational Requirements

Provisional Certified Chemical Dependency Professional (PCDP)

Documentation of 140 clock hours of education of which 70 hours must be substance abuse specific. The 140 hours must include 12 hours on confidentiality of drug and alcohol patient records, 6 hours on counselor ethics, 6 hours on HIV/AIDS risk reduction, and 12 hours on medication assisted therapy. There is no limit on the number of hours that can be earned through distance learning education.

Licensed Chemical Dependency Professional (LCDP) – Track 1

Documentation of 270 clock hours of education with a minimum of 120 clock hours of education in the field of chemical dependency. The 270 hours must include 12 hours on confidentiality of drug and alcohol patient records, 6 hours on counselor ethics, 6 hours on HIV/AIDS risk reduction, and 12 hours on medication assisted therapy. There is no limit on the number of hours that can be earned through distance learning education.

Licensed Chemical Dependency Professional (LCDP) – Track 2

Master's degree in a behavioral science field. Documentation of 180 hours of alcohol or other drug abuse specific coursework. The 180 hours must include 12 hours on confidentiality of drug and alcohol patient records, 6 hours on counselor ethics, 6 hours on HIV/AIDS risk reduction, and 12 hours on medication assisted therapy. There is no limit on the number of hours that can be earned through distance learning education.

Continuing Education Requirements (PCDP, LCDP)

Documentation of 40 hours of approved continuing education every two years. There is no limit on the number of hours that can be earned through distance learning education.

Recognized Clinical Supervisor (RCS)
Educational Requirements

The RCS was developed by the RIBCCDP for clinical supervisors not holding the ICRC recognized CDCS certification, who want recognition by the RIBCCDP to provide clinical supervision to applicants pursuing certification.  Please note that the RCS is RIBCCDP recognition, not an International certification with reciprocity. Requirements:

 1. Masters degree in Behavioral Sciences with two (2) years clinical experience and documentation of 120 clock hours Substance Abuse Specific training.  Included in this 120 clock hours must be 30 hours chemical dependency clinical supervisor education, which includes training in the following four domains: Assessment/Evaluation, Counselor Development, Management/Administration, and Professional Responsibilities.

OR

2. LCDP with 30 clock hours Clinical Supervisor training.  This training must include education in the following four domains: Assessment/Evaluation, Counselor Development, Management/Administration, and Professional Responsibilities.

 Continuing Education Requirements (RCS)
Documentation of 40 hours of continuing education every two years with a minimum of 30 hours substance abuse specific education and a mandatory 10 hours of clinical supervisor specific education.
