This day in 1992, test engineer Neil Papworth sent the simple text message “Merry Christmas” from his computer to the phone of Richard Jarvis, and since then, there has been over 6.1 trillion messages sent in the intervening two decades. That’s roughly 193,000 text messages per second.

It seems kind of oxymoronic given how smart our smartphones have become that so many of us pay for a less efficient form of communication. Neil must be ROTFLOL.
